Mission statement

The mission of Race Car Registry is to identify and document racing cars and their parts. While the Registry is currently focused on Formula One, that is not to say that it will not include other racing series in the future. Our goal is to create as comprehensive a registry as possible. Race Car Registry is made by fans, for fans. It all started when I was visiting one of the many technical museums in Europe. I am intentionally omitting its name, as it would be unfair to single out one museum or imply any wrongdoing. I am sure they do their best to present the best possible collection to their visitors. Anyway, while admiring the Formula One cars on display, I noticed a car sporting BMS Scuderia Italia colours, with an exhibit label identifying it as a Dallara F192. Knowing what a Dallara F192 should look like, my immediate reaction was: “I have no idea what that thing is, but an F192 it is not!” I later discovered that it was actually a Fondmetal GR02 — but for more on that, you will have to visit our Registry. Seeing such an obvious misidentification made me look more carefully. I started noticing other things: a clearly “homemade” front wing on one car, incorrect decals on another… and I found myself thinking: “This is ridiculous. Something should be done about this.” Most visitors are perfectly happy seeing a beautiful racing car from years gone by. For many, simply seeing one brings back memories of the era it represents. But then there are some of us “crazy geeks” who are interested in the details. We want to know what we are actually looking at, because a misidentified or incorrectly presented exhibit can lead to incorrect conclusions. Those “crazy geeks” are our primary audience — although we hope the Registry will also become a useful resource for owners, museums, researchers and anyone working to preserve motorsport history. Race Car Registry is a not-for-profit organisation created by fans, for fans. Any proceeds from products or services we may offer in the future will be used to further our mission.
