Williams is a British Formula One constructor founded by Frank Williams and Patrick Head in 1977. Operating through Williams Grand Prix Engineering, the company became one of the most successful constructors in Formula One history, building its reputation on innovative engineering, strong technical independence and an uncompromising focus on racing.

Williams achieved its first Formula One victory in 1979 and went on to win multiple Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championships. Its cars were driven by many of the sport’s leading drivers, including Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.

Throughout its history, Williams worked with a variety of engine manufacturers, most notably Ford-Cosworth, Honda, Renault, BMW and Mercedes. The partnership with Honda produced the highly successful FW11 and FW11B of the mid-1980s, while the Williams-Renault cars of the 1990s established the team as one of the defining technical forces of that era.

Following its extraordinary success during the 1980s and 1990s, Williams gradually declined from its position at the front of Formula One. The following decades nevertheless produced occasional highlights, including several victories during its partnership with BMW in the early 2000s and Pastor Maldonado’s unexpected victory at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix.

After several increasingly difficult seasons and mounting financial pressure, the Williams family sold the team in 2020 to Dorilton Capital, a US-based investment firm, ending more than four decades of family ownership. The Williams name remained in Formula One, with the new owners continuing to operate the team under its historic identity.

Williams has designed and constructed its own Formula One chassis since its establishment and remains one of the longest-standing and most successful names in Grand Prix racing.
